The Man Who Loved Clowns by June Rae Wood is also a tearjerker.
It is about a girl who loses her parents in a car accident and she and her uncle who has Down Syndrome, go to live with her other uncle and aunt. The uncle's character (with Down Syndrome, Punky) is based on June Rae Wood's real brother, Richard. It is quite moving and also is a really good book about accepting the differences of others.
